Taiwanese wife of Tibetan complains about lack of residency for husband (2011/12/16)

The Taiwanese wife of a Tibetan man is urging the government to give more rights to Tibetans in exile. Tsai Yung-ching蔡詠晴 wants the government to allow residency for people like her husband, a right that’s already available to other foreign spouses.

Documentary maker Tsai Yung-ching is accusing the government of prejudice against her marriage to a Tibetan man. She says countries such as Great Britain and France have a procedure that allows Tibetans-in-exile that are spouses of citizens to become citizens. Tsai wants to know why Taiwan doesn’t do the same.

I asked a woman at our representative office when my husband could receive a residence visa. She actually said I could wait until Tibet becomes independent.

Spouses of Taiwanese need a residence visa to live in Taiwan continuously and to work. Because of the travel documents Tibetans living in exile use, their visas can’t be switched to residence visas.

From the point of view of our country’s overall national security and interests, we limit the arrival in Taiwan of people carrying travel documents. Not just Tibetans in exile in India, but people from all countries who apply to come to Taiwan.

The head of the Bureau of Consular Affairs Chou Chong-hsing emphasized that each country has its own method for dealing with residency for Tibetans that largely arises from a historical background.
